Senior Vice President, Public Policy and Director, AARP Public Policy Institute

Alan Weil is senior vice president, public policy and director of the AARP Public Policy Institute (PPI), overseeing research on financial security, health security, and family, home, and community. Previously, he was editor-in-chief of Health Affairs, executive director of the National Academy for State Health Policy, and directed the Urban Institute’s Assessing the New Federalism project. Weil also served as executive director of Colorado’s Medicaid agency and assistant general counsel in Massachusetts. An elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, he has testified before Congress, published extensively, and is a frequent speaker on health policy. He holds a JD and a master’s in public policy from Harvard and a BA from UC Berkeley.
