After graduating from Case Western Reserve University as part of the combined BA/MD program, she worked with a nonprofit in Vietnam to improve educational and business opportunities for marginalized womens' groups. She is passionate about improving health equity and addressing affordability issues through cost-effective systems, both in the US and abroad.
Christian Balcer
Manager of Nursing Operations, Anne Arundel Medical Center
Christian currently works as the Manager of Nursing Operations at Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC) in Annapolis, Maryland. He moved into this role in June 2018 after completing a one-year Administrative Fellowship working for AAMC CEO Tori Bayless. Christian graduated with his Masters in Health Services Administration Degree from the University of Michigan in 2017. As Manager, he overss the 100-staff member Central Staffing Office and is responsible for supporting throughput initiatives in the main hospital and various business-related functions within the department. Christian is a graduate of the University of Michigan (M.H.S.A., 2017) and Calvin University (B.A., 2015). Outside of work, he is a Division I college soccer referee and enjoys traveling, reading, and staying physically active.
Marie Benoit
MPH Student, University of Georgia
Marie is a MPH candidate in epidemiology at George Washington University. During her time at the V-BID Center, Marie hopes to gain more insight on the health care system and is interested in understanding how the current system can be reformed to increase equity and accessibility for all. In her free time, Marie enjoys traveling, hiking, cooking, playing piano, and spending time with friends and family.
Grace Bowden
Student of Health Law, UCLA School of Law
Grace Bowden graduated from the University of Michigan in 2012 with a degree in Women’s Studies. During her time with the V-BID Center, Grace became interested in the legal and policy aspects of healthcare, and graduated from UCLA School of Law in 2018. Gracie is a licensed attorney in Texas and is currently consulting on various projects. Her interests include camping, trivia nights, and her 15 year old dog Ned.
Michael Budros
Policy Director, Healthsperien LLC
Michael works for Healthsperien, LLC, a DC-based health policy and strategy consulting firm. Michael offers a wide-range of legislative and regulatory guidance and analysis across Healthsperien’s clients, with specific expertise in value-based payment and benefit design in the commercial market and government programs. In partnership with Healthsperien, Michael serves as the Policy Director for the National Coalition on Health Care and the Smarter Health Care Coalition, among other roles.
Jason Buxbaum

Jason is currently studying in the Health Policy PhD program at Harvard University. In addition to his time as an intern and then research associate with the V-BID Center, Jason has held positions with the Task Force on Low-Value Care, the Michigan Public Health Institute, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and the National Academy of State Health Policy. Jason received his MHSA from the University of Michigan in 2014 and his BA from Bates College in 2008.
Laura Chen
Medical Student, University of Maryland School of Medicine
Laura Chen is a medical student at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. After graduating from Johns Hopkins University in 2018 with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Public Health Studies, she completed the Master of Health Science program in the Department of Epidemiology in Genetic Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her interests include urban health and improving access to care.
Dr. Betsy q. cliff
Assistant Professor, The University of Chicago, Department of Public Health Sciences
Dr. Betsy Q Cliff is on the faculty in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Chicago. Dr. Cliff researches topics related to how incentives affect consumer behavior and spending in the medical system. Her studies have looked the effects of cost-sharing on low-value care, benefit design in commercial insurance and Medicaid, determinants of hospital prices, and price transparency initiatives. She has used both quantitative and qualitative methods in research, though primarily focuses on using econometric techniques to identify relevant policy effects. Dr. Cliff earned a Doctorate of Health Services Organization and Policy from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, a Master of Journalism from the Columbia University School of Journalism, and a Bachelor of Government from Dartmouth College.
Rebecca Copeland

Rebecca is a second year Master of Public Health student in Health Management and Policy and a Master of Public Policy student at the University of Michigan School, Gerald R. Ford School. She completed her first graduate summer internship at the Kaiser Family Foundation. Previously, she was a Senior Research Analyst at The Lewin Group. Rebecca graduated from Vanderbilt University in May 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in Medicine, Health, and Society.

Ali Fendrick
Policy Program Manager, Chicago Public Schools
Alison is a Policy Program Manager for Chicago Public Schools. She leads the internal Chicago Public Schools policy redesign processes. Alison graduated from the University of Michigan in 2013 with a degree in Psychology, Spanish, and Community Action & Social Change, and from the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy with a Master's Degree in 2019. She interned at the V-BID Center in-between her two years of teaching with the Teach for America program in Miami, Florida.

Peter Geppert
Associate Consultant, The Chartis Group
Peter Geppert is an Associate Consultant with The Chartis Group, with a focus on EHR implementations, revenue cycle optimizations and operational improvement initiatives. His experiences have had an emphasis on physician billing processes and systems. Prior to The Chartis Group, he worked in Implementation Services at Epic Systems, where he worked to roll out the company’s physician billing application. Additional work includes an administrative internship with Massachusetts Hospital, a research role at the University of Michigan’s Center for Value-Based Insurance Design and a collaboration with Henry Ford Health System. Mr. Geppert received his Master of Health Services Administration at the University of Michigan, and his Bachelor of Business Administration in Operations and Technology Management from the University of Wisconsin.
Sunil Gollamudi

Sunil is a Strategy Consultant with Intermountain Healthcare's Enterprise Initiative Office. His work focuses around initiatives that drive enterprise strategy and innovation, as identified by Intermountain's Executive Leadership Team. Molly graduated from the University of Michigan’s Health Management and Policy Program in 2017 with a Master of Health Services Administration. She currently works at Accenture as a Management Consulting Manager in the Health & Public Service practice, where she is focused on hospital operations strategy and process improvement work. Molly is currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Chelsea Grimmé is a second-year dual degree student pursuing a Master of Health Services Administration (MHSA) and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Michigan. Prior to graduate school, Chelsea spent four years working as a Medication Process Consultant for Cerner Corporation in Kansas City, Missouri where she focused on software implementation and workflow optimization for large integrated delivery networks. In 2014, Chelsea graduated from Tulane University with a Spanish Major and Business Minor.

Ashley Haglund is the Assistant Director of Marketing at UI Health. She continues to remain committed to ensuring value in care for patients and providers. She aligns her current work with her mission to put the patient at the center of health care. Recently her interests have expanded to include hospitality in health care, digital experiences, and culturally competent care. Marianthi is the Manager of Innovation at Meritus Health and currently pursuing her doctorate in public health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She previously was the manager of government relations and program manager of the rapid implementation of strategic experiments program at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Prior to that, she served as a program supervisor for the neuroscience institute at Parkview Health. Marianthi holds a master's degree in Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan. Her Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience, a Bachelor of Arts in English, and a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology are all from Indiana University.

Sarah interned with V-BID in the summer of 2016, and is currently an MPH student at the University of Michigan's School of Public Health. Her interests include health policy reform, health education, and LGBTQ access to quality healthcare.

Alison Jensen
Healthy Communities Program Specialist, Whatcom County Health Department
Ali received her Master’s of Public Health in Health Management and Policy from the University of Michigan in 2016. She is now a civil servant at the Whatcom County Health Department in Bellingham, Washington. As Program Specialist of Healthy Communities, her work centers on the Food System and Health Equity. Most recently, Ali helped develop a countywide food system plan that outlines programs and policies for a more robust and sustainable food system.

Kerry Lindquist

Kerry Lindquist is a Senior at the University of Michigan pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Community and Global Public Health in the School of Public Health. Kerry previously worked as a Policy Analyst for the CLOSUP research center affiliated with Michigan’s Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, helping to coordinate and market events involving local, state, and urban policy. She is particularly interested in ethical approaches to health policy and infectious disease control. This past summer, Kerry worked for Dr. Dana Telem in the Center for Healthcare Outcomes and Policy, providing research assistance and consultation on workplace conflicts between women surgeons and other non-physician healthcare staff. In her spare time, Kerry loves try new restaurants in downtown Ann Arbor with friends and rewatch episodes of ‘Criminal Minds'.
Hannah Lucas
Medical Student, Washington University in St. Louis
Hannah Lucas is a medical student at Washington University in St. Louis where she plans to pursue a combined MD/MPH. Though she majored in Neuroscience and German as an undergraduate at the University of Michigan, Hannah’s minor in Gender & Health and time spent abroad led her to develop an interest in health policy and its impact on health disparities. Now that she is studying to become a physician and involved in caring for a diverse patient population in St. Louis, Hannah routinely sees the impact of these policies and is using skills she learned in her time with the V-BID Center to study resulting disparities, especially those in maternal and child health outcomes.

Kristen is currently a Winston Health Policy Fellow with the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance. She graduated in 2018 with a Master of Public Health in Health Management and Policy from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. She previously interned with the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group and held positions at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and the International Rescue Committee. Adwaiy Manerikar

Adwaiy is a medical student at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine. He went to Northwestern for his undergraduate degree and majored in Neuroscience. After working at V-BID, he began to focus on his research interests of technology and medicine. His work encompassed the use of machine learning to help individuals monitor their diet and caloric intake. He is currently focused on his medical studies and excited to learn about how he can best improve the health of his patients in the future.
Hannah Markus
National Coverage for Innovation Intern, Families USA
Hannah Markus is currently a full-time Intern at Families USA in Washington D.C. where she works on the National Coverage for Innovation team. She recently graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Public Health. Before entering her senior year, Hannah worked as a Research Assistant at the V-BID Center. In her current work, she integrates the V-BID framework and concepts into her projects that advise state and federal policymakers how to expand access to healthcare coverage. Hannah credits V-BID for her sparking her interest in addressing health inequities through improved public insurance plans.
Ruth McDonald
Consultant, Avalere Health, LLC
Ruth currently works at a health policy consulting firm, Avalere Health, where she helps companies, advocacy organizations, and trade associations navigate the ever-changing legislative and regulatory landscape. Prior to Avalere, Ruth worked in the Office of Health Policy for the US Department of Health and Human Services for the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE). She also provided technical assistance to state Medicaid programs at the Center for Evidence-based Policy at Oregon Health & Science University. In Congress, Ruth served nearly 7 years as a healthcare staffer for House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) and Congressman Jim Cooper (TN) during the enactment and early implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Ruth began her career working on communications campaigns for healthcare clients at public relations and production firm GMMB. Ruth has an MPH in health management and policy and an MPP from the University of Michigan. She earned her BA in the history of science and medicine from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.

Michael Richard (Rick) McKellar, MHSA is a Senior Associate at Stanton Road Capital, a Los Angeles-based private equity firm specializing in middle market healthcare acquisitions. Mr. McKellar oversees diligence and underwriting of potential acquisitions with a particular focus on financial modeling. Prior to joining Stanton Road, Mr. McKellar spent three years at Paladin Healthcare where he conducted financial diligence of potential hospital acquisition and supported the operations of six community hospitals.
Justin Mitchell

Justin is currently a Vice President at Asserta Health, a patient advocacy service, where he leads the creation of the processes and technology for managing cash payment for complex surgical procedures and professional services to help individuals, employers, TPAs, and fully-insured health plans save money and receive high-quality care. Prior to his work at Asserta Health, Justin worked at Dossia, a Personal Health Record company that was working to make population health personal. At Dossia, Justin led the creation of a Health Rules engine for encouraging effective utilization of health care services by individuals who signed up for a personal health record account. Justin joined Dossia immediately following his time with V-BID.

Neetha Mony is the Electronic Laboratory Reporting Coordinator at the Washington State Department of Health.
“People in social services are often divided into two categories: prevention and postvention. Prevention efforts focus on decreasing the number of people who can be affected by an issue. This can include education, stakeholder outreach and engagement, and advocacy efforts on policy change. Postvention is what most people think social workers do. These are the counselors and therapists who enter the picture after the damage has occurred. V-BID’s efforts align with my own desire to decrease the number of people who are exposed to experiences that would require postvention efforts. Working at V-BID helped me see a client-centered, for-profit business model. It wasn’t until I started my current position that I realized how V-BID has changed my problem-solving perspective.”
Ana Sofia Moreno-Mesa
Medical Student, Northwestern Feinber School of Medicine
Ana Sofia is currently a fourth-year medical student at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine applying into Family Medicine. Her interests include community health, quality improvement research, and social justice advocacy. Prior to beginning medical school, Ana Sofia served as an AmeriCorps VISTA with El Rio Community Health Center, a federally-qualified health center located in Tucson, AZ. She is a recipient of the Army’s Health Professions Scholarship and plans to begin a military medical career upon her graduation from medical school in 2021.
“Learning to manage social media and learning the basics of lobbying have been invaluable skills since leaving V-BID, but what I found most valuable during my experience was learning the vocabulary and base knowledge to understand the healthcare system. In addition, Andy is the creator, editor, and head chef, of the digital health-focused blog, Healthcare Pizza. Prior to Evolent, Andy worked for CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield in their MBA/MHA graduate development program and Blue Cottage Consulting, an independent healthcare consulting firm specializing in strategy, operations, and facility planning services for hospitals and health systems. Andy holds and MHSA from the University of Michigan and BS from Grand Valley State University.
Hope Norris
Senior Healthcare Data Analyst, Milliman
Hope is currently a Senior Healthcare Data Analyst in Milliman's New York-Atlanta Health Practice. She conducts health care claims data analyses to support design and implementation of value-based payment models; analyses of health care policy; and population health projects, such as Milliman's annual Qualified Entity (QE) Report. Hope is grateful to have had the opportunity to start her career at the V-BID Center, where she gained a greater understanding of the American health policy landscape. Esther works as a Research Area Specialist at the University of Michigan Medical school and is affiliated with the Center for Healthcare Outcome and Policy. She manages projects under topics of Medicaid expansion and improvement of hospital architecture for better patient outcomes. While at the V-BID Center, Haley learned more about the role that clinically nuanced benefit design can play in providing better care and promoting health equity for consumers. Caroline Richburg
General Surgery Resident, Yale New Haven Health
Dr. Richburg completed her undergraduate degree in both Biomolecular Science and Anthropology at the University of Michigan in 2019 and completed her medical degree at the University of Michigan Medical School in 2023. She is now a general surgery resident at Yale New Haven Health. Dr. Richburg worked as a V-BID intern during the summer of 2018 and continued to work on reducing low-value preoperative testing while she was in medical school under the mentorship of Dr. Lesly Dossett.

Sarah is currently a third-year graduate student pursuing a Master of Public Health in Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health and a Master of Business Administration from the Ross School of Business. Maggie graduated from the University of Michigan in 2018 and completed her medical degree at the University of Chicago in 2023. She is now training in pediatrics at Stanford. She worked as an intern and research assistant at the V-BID Center from 2017-2019. As her career progresses, she continues to integrate lessons learned in systems-based-practice and advocacy during her time at the V-BID Center into her work in pediatrics.

Beth is a first year medical student at the University of Michigan. She is interested in the interplay between healthcare policy and population hopes to pursue a career in primary care and healthcare advocacy. Rashna recently graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and a minor in Spanish. While at the V-BID Center, Rashna discovered her interest in innovative approaches to improving affordability and quality of care. Rashna previously worked at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on the Medicare Advantage Value-Based Insurance Design Model, as well as for the National Cancer Institute's Healthcare Delivery Research Program. She currently works at the University of California Breast Care Center and will be applying to medical school in the summer. Apart from work, Rashna loves comedy shows and eating spicy food.

Monica Sridhar graduated from Case Western Reserve University in 2014 as a Chemistry major and Business Management minor. During this time, Monica worked at V-BID because because she became interested in process improvement and ways to enhance the American healthcare system. Here, she was able to understand a unique approach to lowering the cost of health care while increasing its quality. She used this experience to continue her progress in the healthcare policy field and landed an internship during her gap year at the Patient and Family Centered Care Center at the University of Pittsburgh.

Sharon Thomas is currently an Administrative Fellow at Henry Ford Health System. Sharon grew up in Chennai, India and Farmington Hills, Michigan. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience with a minor in Gender & Health (Women’s Studies) from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2014. Following graduation, she then pursued a Master of Health Services Administration (MHSA) at the University of Michigan (’20). During her time at the University of Michigan, she worked at the V-BID Center as a Graduate Research Analyst as well as Michigan Medicine as a Clinical Research Analyst with the Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) team on numerous clinical research studies and quality improvement initiatives. Sharon completed her administrative internship at Sutter Health with the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) in Fremont, California. Sharon's interests include strategy, operations, value-based care, population health, chronic health conditions, and health disparities. Outside of work, Sharon enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, dancing, and exploring new cuisines and restaurants.

As the Director of the HFCI Precision Medicine Program, Louisa is responsible for ensuring HFCI patients receive the most highly personalized, targeted treatment for their cancer. Louisa oversees program staff and multidisciplinary committees working on the foundational elements critical to the practice of Precision Medicine, including the Syapse point-of-care data platform, genomic testing, the molecular tumor board, and the biorepository. In partnership with the Precision Medicine Medical Director Tom Mikkelsen, M.D., Louisa is building on the HFCI Precision Medicine infrastructure for a non-cancer Precision Medicine initiative. The goal is to offer genomics-based prevention and screening, diagnostics, pharmacogenetics and other treatments, for specialties including Cardiology, Infectious Diseases, Behavioral Health, Transplant and Neurology.
